Switchel is made with apple cider vinegar, sweetener, and water, and sometimes includes ginger and lemon. My recipe omits the ginger and lemon and I used blueberries instead.
According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, switchel (also called haymaker’s punch) was used to quench the thirst of colonial farmers. It also happens to be a source of electrolytes and provides a small amount of potassium.
Ingredients
1/8 cup raw apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup frozen blueberries
1 quart cold water
Combine ingredients in a quart sized jar (you don’t even need to measure the water! Just add the other ingredients and top it off with cold water!) Shake the jar until the honey is mixed in. Let it chill in the refrigerator for at least an hour. Serve cold.
